Knox Students Raise Pennies for Vance

Students at two local schools raised nearly $3,000 for one of their own recently during a goodhearted competition. Proceeds from the two-week Pennies for Vance drive at Knox elementary and middle schools were given to the family of kindergarten student Vance Flagg, who is undergoing treatment for Acute Myeloid Leukemia. He’s scheduled for a stem cell transplant in a couple of weeks and and additional rounds of intense chemotherapy.

His brothers Tanner and Trevor are in the 8th grade at Knox Middle School. The National Junior Honor Society spearheaded the fundraiser and upped the ante by getting the principals involved. The 451 Knox Middle School students raised an average of $2.33 per student, while the elementary school pupils raised an average of $1.97 each. Since Knox Elementary School lost, each of the Flagg boys got to throw a cream pie in Principal Glenn Barnes’ face during a convocation at Knox Middle School. First, school officials presented the donation to Vance and his family.

“It means a lot,” his mom, Angie Flagg, said afterward. “The whole school, even the kids, did just wonderful, and all for Vance. Just to know even strangers did this for Vance. Our community… everybody did so good.”
