Kid’s Closet Ministry Awarded $2000 Grant for Coats

A local organization is looking to keep kids warm this winter, and to help in that endeavor, the Northern Indiana Community Foundation awarded Kid’s Closet Ministry $2000 to be used to purchase coats for children. Linda Lewandowski with Kid’s Closet Ministry explained the grant will allow them to purchase up to 100 coats to be distributed to kids throughout Starke County.

“This grant is specifically for coats for kids in Starke County. Every week, we are sending out coats for kids through our teachers in the school systems. They send us the orders; for instance, this week we had 15 kids that needed either coats or clothes or boots or something and we deliver it to the schools,” Lewandowski said.

Lewandowski also noted that the organization is holding a clothes drive throughout the month of November to collect hats, gloves and scarves, with drop-off sites located at North Judson United Methodist Church, Max Effex and Route 10 Bar and Grill in North Judson, and the Department of Children’s Services in Knox.

“We are currently collecting hats, gloves and scarves of all sizes for kids of all ages, because when we do give a coat to a child, we want to offer those things also,” Lewandowski explained.

The program looks to help children in Starke County by providing them with the essentials they need for school. Lewandowski said children are sent to the ministry at the recommendation of teachers or through Love INC, where children are screened and then turned over to the program for assistance.
