Indiana National Guard to Honor Fallen Soldiers

The Indiana National Guard will honor seven fallen soldiers, including Spc. Robert Tauteris from Hamlet and Brian Leonhardt of Merrillville.

Major General R. Martin Umbarger will help conduct the ceremony where seven personalized shadow boxes will be dedicated to the memory of the sacrifices of these Indiana Guardsmen who served in the 113th Engineer Battalion.

These men were killed in action when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb in Afghanistan in January of last year.

The shadow boxes will be permanently mounted in the Indiana National Guard Valparaiso Armory. Those who see the boxes will know that these soldiers gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Sgt. 1st Class Daniel Chavez, Staff Sgt. Jonathan Metzger, Sgt. Brian Leonhardt, Spc. Robert Tauteris, Spc. Christopher Patterson, Spc. Nicholas Taylor and Spc. Sergio Perez will be honored in the ceremony scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. CT at the Harre Union Building on the Valparaiso University campus.
