Woman, Pet Rescued From Within Burning House

A woman and her pet were saved by police after being trapped inside a burning home late Sunday night.

LaPorte County emergency first responder agencies were called to 1106 Pennsylvania Ave. after receiving word that a woman was trapped inside the home, along with a pet, and was unable to get out of the home.

The woman told police that she had been sleeping and awoke to the smell of smoke. When she got up to see what was going on, she saw her laundry room fully engulfed in flames. She attempted to open a window to get out of the home, but it jammed.

LaPorte Cpl. Billy Degnegaard arrived on scene observed smoke coming from the home and a woman yelling from a window on the east side of the dwelling. Degnegaard tried to assist the woman and a dog inside the home through the jammed window. He broke the window and with the assistance of other officers who arrived on scene, got the woman and the dog outside the window. One dog had escaped earlier through the small window opening.

The woman was transported to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and cuts to her hands. The two dogs were placed with a neighbor.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
