Number of IU Health Layoffs Increased; No Local Impact Indicated

A letter from Dan Evans to the IU Health Team has indicated an increase in the number of anticipated layoffs as part of the corporation’s strive toward a 25 percent improvement in productivity over the next five years. Previously, Evans indicated that approximately 800 jobs would be cut at the academic health center, IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, IU Health North, Saxony and Tipton hospitals, as well as System Services.

Now, however, Evans’ letter indicated that the healthcare system is now beginning the process of notifying more than 900 of their employees that their positions have been eliminated, though the hospitals to be affected has not changed, according to the letter.

In September, Evans had sent a letter to IU Health employees indicating that in order to achieve their goal of productivity improvement, the healthcare system must “execute significant cost savings throughout the system while simultaneously investing in the technologies and processes required to change the way” they deliver care. Evans also said that they have not been making “sufficient progress” toward that goal, and as a result, determined it necessary to implement these workforce reductions.

In order to lessen the blow, however, Evans stated in his letter that the system will provide a 60-day working notice period as well as severance and outplacement services. On top of that, Human Resources will assist as many team members who have been impacted as possible to find another position within IU Health.
