The Indiana State Police officials are accepting applications for the 74th ISP Recruit Academy.

Duties include patrolling county, state and federal roads to detect and apprehend criminal and traffic law violators, investigate accidents, render first aid to victims until Emergency Medical Services arrive at the scene, criminal investigations, and a host of other requirements.

Homecoming Week is Next Week at Knox High School

 
 

Knox High School will hold homecoming activities throughout the week next week to lead up to  Friday’s football game.

It all starts Monday, Sept. 30 where students are encouraged to show their school spirit by wearing different styles of clothing to school. Monday is Costume Day, Tuesday is Twin Day, Wednesday is Western Day, Thursday is Class Color Day and Friday is Red and White Day.

Indiana State Police Remind Motorists of School Bus Laws

 
 

The Indiana State Police recently made two announcements pertaining to school buses and the laws in place regarding stopped buses. Indiana law requires school bus drivers to stop at all railway crossings, whether those crossings are equipped with crossing arms or not, and visually inspect for oncoming trains. The Indiana State Police Commercial Motor Vehicle Division has recently received reports from some school districts of their buses being struck in the rear by motorists failing to realize that they are required to stop at rail way crossings.

More Employment Data Released for August

  
 

The monthly employment report has been released for the month of August, but that report doesn’t tell the whole story. More information has been released regarding manufacturing job growth and other growth as well, highlighting the addition of jobs in the state.

Indiana ranked fourth in the nation in manufacturing job growth in August, having added more than 3000 jobs in the field, and ranked 10th in the nation in rate of growth over the month at 0.6 percent. Since the low point of employment in June 2009, the Hoosier state has added more than 60,000 manufacturing jobs, ranking second for manufacturing job creation since that point.

DNR to Celebrate National Public Lands Day Sept. 28

 
 

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources has announced they will recognize current and former military members, encourage volunteerism and offer nature activities as part of this year’s National Public Lands Day, celebrated on Sept. 28. Active-duty military personnel and veterans can enter Indiana state park and reservoir properties as well as Deam and Starve Hollow state recreation areas for free on that day only. The free admission extends to anyone in the same vehicle.

Northwest Indiana Partnership for Clean Water to Host Riverwatch Workshops

  
 

The Northwest Indiana Partnership for Clean Water has announced they will be hosting two Hoosier Riverwatch workshops this fall in the region in the hopes of getting the public involved in becoming active stewards of our rivers and streams through watershed education and monitoring. Hoosier Riverwatch is a statewide volunteer stream monitoring program coordinated by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.

Two Bridge Projects Still on Track, Says INDOT Representative

 
 
Two construction projects in the area are moving along, according to an INDOT representative who said the U.S. 6 bridge work south of LaPorte and the bridge work on U.S. 35 south of U.S. 30 are moving along, still on track to be completed in November.

Matt Deitchley, media relations director for INDOT, told WKVI that the U.S. 6 bridge work is progressing and crews are working on the walls to strengthen the support of the bridge and the piers. Continue reading

Initial Feasibility Study Finds Need for Hotel in Winamac

  
 
Winamac can support a new 40-bed hotel, according to an initial feasibility study. That’s in line with the proposed development of a 44-room facility proposed by Wisconsin-based Cobblestone Development. Developer John F. Seibert says the accommodations would be similar to those offered by a Holiday Inn Express or Hampton Inn. His company specializes in developing budget friendly accommodations for business travelers and others in small rural communities like Winamac. Pulaski County Economic Development Director Nathan P. Origer told the county commissioners the next step is to meet with potential investors. Seibert says hotels like the one his company is proposing take about five months to build.

Starke County Veteran Service Officer Tenders Resignation

Plagued by medical issues, Starke County Veteran Service Officer Gordon Richie this week told the county commissioners that it is with a heavy heart that he must tender his resignation. Because Richie does not qualify for FMLA, his position cannot be held open for him, and Commissioner Kathy Norem said she is scared of setting a precedent if they were to reserve that position for Richie.

Flu Season Approaching; Get Vaccinated Soon

 
 
Flu season isn’t quite here yet but it is right around the corner, and even now, the flu is always present and everyone is encouraged to get their flu shots. Lynch said everyone should get vaccinated, especially the elderly residents, pregnant women or anyone with health problems that are severely affected by the flu.

“Unless you have an egg allergy or anything of that nature – if there’s some medical reason as to why your doctor recommends that you do not get a flu shot – but otherwise, CDC recommends that everyone six months of age and older get a flu vaccination,” said Lynch.

Knox Community School Board Holds Public Hearing on Budget

The Knox Community School Board held a public hearing on the all funds budget last week which includes the General Fund, Capital Projects Plan and the Bus Replacement Plan.

Superintendent A.J. Gappa said there wasn’t any public comment on the budget.

“Nobody was here to speak up so we will advertise the budget and then have a meeting on Oct. 7 to adopt it,” explained Gappa. “From that point on, it will be sent down to the DLGF in Indianapolis and they will do their magic on the budget. They will then send us a 1782 notice later on to show what it really looks like.”

Medication Drop Box in Use at Knox City Police Department

 
 
The Knox City Police Department pill drop is helpful, according to City Police Chief Clint Norem.

He said residents have been taking unwanted, expired and unused prescription medications to the lobby of the police department and depositing them into the drop box for collection. Chief Norem explained that those medications are logged and then stored until DEA officials can collect those medications for incineration.

Unemployment Report Released for August

  
 
The unemployment rate in Starke County has dropped by one percentage point, according to the unemployment report released for August. Starke County’s unemployment rate is now at 8.8 percent, ranking 14th in the state but still 0.7 percentage points higher than the state’s unemployment rate and 1.5 percentage points higher than that of the nation.

Pulaski County dropped by 0.8 percentage points, ranking 79th in the state at 6.2 percent. Marshall County came in at 7.7 percent, having dropped by 0.6 percentage points, ranking 36th. LaPorte County came in at 9.1 percent, dropping 0.8 percent, ranking 10th. Fulton County dropped 0.6 percentage points for 7.9 percent and ranking 33rd. St. Joseph County also dropped 0.8 percent, ranking 11th at 9 percent, and Porter County came in at 7.6 percent, dropping 0.6 percentage points for 37th.

Existing Monterey Bridge Set to Close Temporarily

 
 
The existing bridge across the Tippecanoe River heading north out of Monterey will be closed to all but emergency traffic for up to 60 days starting Monday. Pulaski County Highway Superintendent Mark Fox says the closure is necessary in order to pour the approaches to the new bridge that is being built alongside the old structure. The old bridge will remain in place as a pedestrian crossing once the new structure is finished. It has been deemed historic and cannot be removed, but an inspection found that it can no longer withstand the weight of vehicle traffic and needs to be replaced.

INDOT Reopens State Road 39 north of U.S. 30

 
 
A highway in LaPorte County is open again after being closed to repair a railroad crossing. State Road 39 between U.S. 30 and U.S. 6 reopened this week. The road was closed so repairs could be made to a railroad crossing. INDOT officials say the work wrapped up ahead of schedule, so the road has been reopened to through traffic.

Pulaski County Maintenance Supervisor Relocates Office

  
 
The Pulaski County Maintenance Department is now housed at the county highway garage north of downtown Winamac on U.S. 35. Maintenance supervisor Jeff Johnson received permission from the county commissioners to move his office from the courthouse basement into one of the spare spaces at the highway building. The former maintenance office will now be converted into a supply closet. In addition to cleaning and maintaining all of the buildings in the county, the maintenance department is also in charge of ordering office supplies for all county departments as part of an effort to save money. They buy supplies like ink pens and copy paper in bulk to take advantage of price breaks and distribute them to offices on an as-needed basis.

Starke Council Approves Budget, Salaries

  
 
The Starke County Council this week made a number of salary and budget-related adoptions, including the salary for the sheriff in 2015. The council first adopted the county’s 2014 budget, having held a number of workshops and discussions, according to Council President Dave Pearman, who said this is “as good as it’s going to get.” He said the budget is based on the county’s levy, and County Auditor Kay Chaffins was instrumental in the budgets development.

North Judson Town Board to Hold Budget Adoption Hearing Oct. 7

  
 
The North Judson Town Board held a public hearing this week regarding the 2014 budget. Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry explained there were no members of the public present, and Council President Wendy Hoppe presented the budget as it was advertised with no changes. An adoption hearing is scheduled for Oct. 7 prior to the regular meeting, and Henry said the town board will then sign a resolution to adopt the budget. Following that, the budget heads to the Department of Local Government Finance.
