LaPorte High School Student Died of Genetic Heart Defect

A 17-year-old LaPorte High School football player died of natural causes.

Coroner John Sullivan told WKVI that the preliminary autopsy results revealed that Jacob West died of right ventricular cardiomyopathy, which is a genetic defect.

West had been running laps during football practice at Kiwanas Field in LaPorte Wednesday night when he collapsed. Efforts were made to revive him, including CPR and the use of an automated external defibrillator but those efforts were not successful. He was rushed to IU Health LaPorte Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Memorial services for Jacob Everett Andrew West will be Sunday, Sept. 29 at 4:30 p.m. CT at Kiwanas Field in LaPorte. Memorial contributions may be made to the LaPorte High School La Crosse Club. Arrangements are being handled by the Essling Funeral home in LaPorte.
