A Hamlet man was arrested on several charges after reportedly leaving the scene of a property damage accident.

LaPorte police responded to the area of Rose Street and McCollum Street where police found that William Conner, 40, had crashed and kept traveling down the roadway.

Police found wheel marks that indicated Conner left the roadway, struck the curbing and went back onto the roadway. Conner’s pick-up truck sustained a flat tire in the incident and police followed the gouges in the roadway to where he was traveling.

Within minutes, the officers found a pick-up heading south on U.S. 35. The truck had sparks coming from the front tire area, a non-working headlight and its hazard lights engaged. A traffic stop was initiated and Conner was taken into custody.

Conner was arrested on preliminary felony charges of Operating While Intoxicated (prior conviction) and Resisting Law Enforcement, plus misdemeanor charges of Operating While Intoxicated (three counts), Possession of Marijuana and Failure to Stop at a Property Damage Accident. He received citations for Driving While Suspended and False and Fictitious Registration.
