Rail Safety Week Aug. 25-31

This week is Rail Safety Week, as declared by Governor Mike Pence.

Indiana Operation Lifesaver, Indiana State Police, Indiana Department of Transportation, local law enforcement and railroad companies have partnered to raise awareness about the dangers of disregarding railroad crossings and transportation laws.

Indiana Operation Lifesaver has scheduled enforcement blitzes throughout the state involving law enforcement agencies. Officials will be monitoring railroad crossings and enforcing laws regarding railroad traffic control signals and laws pertaining to pedestrians trespassing on railroad rights-of-way.

There were 106 railroad crossing collisions last year resulting in injuries to 38 people and 17 fatalities. Eleven trespasser deaths were reported last year. Indiana is ranked fourth nationally for railroad crossing collisions.
