Marshall County Housing Authority Facing Funding Crisis

The Marshall County Housing Authority is facing a crisis and it will come down to a meeting today to see if it will stay in existence.

Donna Vela explained that the sequester has hit her administration funding hard – so hard that if they don’t form a consortium with the Warsaw/Goshen Housing Authority, all vouchers will be available statewide to those who need them and not used specifically for Marshall County residents.

Vela told the council that 40 percent will be cut from administration funds this year and for the next 10 years. If they aren’t involved in this consortium, it will affect people who use 130 vouchers for housing.

She asked the council to help fund $10,000 of the $20,000 shortfall this year with the other half picked up by the city of Plymouth, although the city has not committed to funding the request.

The council suggested that she appear before the Marshall County Commissioners and ask for a recommendation to the council for funding. Vela said she will know more about where the Marshall County Housing Authority stands after today’s meeting.
