“Harvesting Our Future” Event This Weekend

The “Harvesting Our Future” event is planned for this weekend at Wythogan Park in Knox. On Saturday, Aug. 24, a car show, games, food booths, vendors and a parade down main street will take place to fill the void left by the Harvest Festival that was canceled this year due to lack of a coordinator.

Board member Lora Thompson Hall told WKVI that the event is focused around providing children in the community with a weekend of fun and community awareness.

“We are looking to get community involvement in doing something for the kids. We’re also looking to raise food for the local food bank through the tough times that everybody seems to be having, and getting the community together and making awareness toward the drugs and trouble we’ve been having in the community,” Hall said.

Hall explained the event will also feature officers doing fingerprinting for children and allowing them to check out humvees.

“We’re trying to get a relationship with our police departments again so they’re not viewed as being the bad people and trying to incorporate all that in, and basically just really starting to get things going as a community in getting everybody involved,” she said.

The parade will travel down Main Street starting at 3 p.m., with more activities for kids sponsored by Trinity Assembly of God taking place at the City Parking Lot. The parade check-in is at 1 p.m. on Main Street near the school.

“Harvesting Our Future” board member Colleen Jones explained the event will also feature a jump house, finger painting, and other events as well, including a car show. She said the community has really come forward to help as much as possible.

While the board is asking for donations to participate in the car show, Hall said they’re not asking for money; rather, they’re looking for canned goods that would be given to the local food pantry.

The event will take place on Aug. 24 with no entry fee. Registration for the car show begins at 8 a.m. CT at Wythogan Park, where a variety of other attractions will take place as well. The car show begins at 10 a.m. and awards will be given to the top three in various categories with judging to be held at 12 p.m. The car show ends at 1 p.m.
