Heartland Artists Gallery in Plymouth announced the recipient of the 2013 Heartland Artists High School Art Award at their monthly meeting on June 29. Angel Okray will receive a $500 scholarship to be applied toward expenses at an accredited college or university.

Okray, a graduate of Culver Community High School, said she plans to attend the University of Indianapolis this fall. She participated in a number of extracurricular activities during her time in high school, including the Culver Alliance for Volunteer Services, Art Club, Business Professionals of America, Students Support Our Troops, Varsity Club, National Honor Society, Key Club and Peers Educating Peers.

Okray said she expresses her feelings through drawing and explained it relaxes her and gives her peace of mind. Her greatest artistic accomplishment to date, she said, was working on the mural displayed at Rochester High School. She enjoys using different mediums including pencil, watercolor, pen and ink and mixed media.

The next Open House Reception, featuring Artist of the Month Lisa Lea Bemish, and Member of the Month Perry Olshein, will be Friday, July 12 from 5 to 8 p.m.
