Civic Group Looks to Expand into North Judson

Members of the Winamac Lions Club want to help organize a new chapter in North Judson. Connie Roe says Lions Club International wants to do an accelerated start-up to get a club going. She says the Winamac club is willing to serve as their sponsor.

“San Pierre had a Lions Club, but they folded last year. There is no surrounding Lions Club with the exception of maybe Bass Lake or Winamac that would even help support the area, so I think it’s important that this area have a club to help support those needs that aren’t being met by other organizations,” said Roe.

Roe says it takes at least 20 members to form and sustain a club. She says members give back to their communities in many ways.

“Some of the things that Lions Clubs have done in their communities are helping support band, athletics, they can do a kid sight screening, they can buy eyeglasses for needy families, coats, get involved in their schools, any other service project that might be going on, provide scholarships for graduating seniors – if you can think it, you can do it,” she said.

The North Judson Town Council gave Roe and other Winamac Lions Club members their blessing to approach members of the community about becoming members of the service organization. In addition to being sponsored by the Winamac Lions Club, the new organization will have “Guiding Lions” from another chapter to help the new officers learn their duties and file their necessary paperwork.
