The Culver Community High School Business Professionals of America members are gearing up to attend the BPA National Leadership Conference in Orland, Fla., May 8 – 12. Two students will be attending the conference, having advanced to Nationals from the State Leadership Conference in Indianapolis.
Justin Croy earned second place in Computer Modeling at State while Janele VanDePutte placed fourth at State to advance to the National competition at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort.
Gene Baker, the BPA adviser for the high school, said the BPA students have been staying busy with a new event that started off the school year: “Club Go-Week.” He said the event provides all of the co-curricular and extracurricular groups at Culver with the opportunity to reach out to students in an effort to increase BPA membership. He said the event received several positive comments from the groups that participated this year, and he said the excellent reception has prompted them to continue the event next year.
Besides that, Baker said the members have been spending most of their time preparing for events and fundraising. Because of their enrollment of 38 students participating in BPA this year, the students needed to raise a lot of money in order to attend the events. In that aspect, Baker said, the students succeeded; they raised more than $6000 this year for District and State competitions, and with another $4300 they need for Nationals, the students will have raised a total of more than $10,000 this year.
