Play it Safe, Call Before You Dig

It’s the time of year when you start to think about springtime yard projects.

NIPSCO urges you to call 811 before you continue with an outdoor project that requires digging. Call that number two working days before the start of a project to make sure no gas lines are located underneath the area in which you plan on digging.

Once a call is made, a professional utility line locator will visit the dig site to mark the appropriate location of underground utility lines with paint or flags. It will be after those lines are found when you can continue on with a project.

Last year there were more than 1,000 instances where natural gas lines were struck by contractors, homeowners or outside parties.

In recognition of National Safe Digging Month, make sure you call 811 before progressing with any project. It’s the law.
