Several people were sentenced in the Starke Circuit Court yesterday, among them Kyle Bobb, who pleaded guilty to Burglary as a Class B felony and Samuel Singleton, who admitted to a variety of charges spanning four cases in the court.
Superintendent Dr. Robert Klitzman said that the board met in sort of a brainstorming situation to gather criteria and qualifications in what they’re looking for in a new superintendent. The board will be looking at state guidelines and the corporation’s needs when discussing a new leader in the corporation.
“The enrollment in the preschool program is now up to thirteen students in each class – one class in the morning and one class in the afternoon. Three of those students are new students who entered the class as the result of the recent Kindergarten Roundup,” said Gappa.
Those students will be entering kindergarten this August with the rest of the kindergarten students.
The inaugural Relay for Life Pageant sponsored by DeMotte State Bank surpassed their every hope, according to Co-director Pamela McDonald. She said with the 33 contestants that turned out, and the more than 200 attendees, the event raised more than their goal of $1500, and the success has pushed them to hold the pageant again next year due to the event’s overwhelming achievement.
The North Judson-San Pierre High School Band participated in the annual Indiana State School Music Association Organizational Contest on Friday, April 19th at Northridge High School in Middlebury. They earned a Gold Rating.
The Knox High School Band performed this Saturday, April 13 at Kankakee Valley High School in ISSMA High School Organizational Contest. The band was among 19 bands all with hopes of Gold ratings in both performance and sight reading. Knox received Gold ratings in both performance and sight reading. This caps an amazing winter season for the Instrumental Music and Dance Department where all winter ensembles provided stellar performances at their respective State competitions.
The Henry F. Schricker Public Library sponsored a cupcake contest at the library last week. The theme was “How does the community relate to the library?” Nine people submitted their creations to a panel of judges who taste-tested all of the submissions.
The judges were from WKVI Radio, Mexico Lindo, County Kettle and Christo’s Restaurant. A variety of different flavors and textures pleased the judges as they chomped and sampled. Continue reading
Members of the Whatever It Takes Committee hope to persuade undecided Knox Community School Corporation voters to support a property tax referendum to address problems with the school’s 60-year-old Palmer wing. Issues include an outdated heating and cooling system for which parts are no longer available, an electrical system that is inadequate to handle the load put on it by computers and other techonology and a cafeteria that’s too small to prepare food for the entire student body. They’ve held a series of open houses at the school so voters can see the problems for themselves. One lady, Gail, remains undecided. She says she wants to make sure school officials are prudent stewards of taxpayer money.
The officer with the Knox City Police Department was following a vehicle that was traveling 62 mph in a 45 mph zone. The officer continued to follow the vehicle through the area and caught up to the driver who was now traveling 90 mph. The driver then entered the intersection 250 South and 250 East and blew through the stop sign. The officer allegedly saw the occupants throw items from the windows. After traveling a distance and blowing through a few more stop signs, the driver finally stopped on 500 South, a half-mile from U.S. 35.
A man charged with rape and sexual battery in 2010 will be on trial this week in Starke Circuit Court.
Virgil Noble is facing those charges after being arrested after an incident involving inappropriate sexual contact with a Hamlet woman. Noble was arrested at his home on Dec. 28, 2010 on an active arrest warrant for the charges.
The Marshall County Coroner’s Office and Police Department are investigating an apparent Tuesday afternoon suicide in a Culver cemetery. Deputy Coroner Bridgett Hite says Margurite C. Quimby, 56, of Claypool, telephoned the 911 dispatch center, told them she was going to take her own life, and hung up. Dispatchers tried unsuccessfully to call her back and sent officers to Poplar Grove Church just east of Culver on State Road 10. Officers found Quimby’s body in the cemetery behind the church. Quimby left a note in her car with information as to who to contact, according to Hite, who says foul play is not suspected. Quimby’s family has been notified.
The Knox City Council held a public hearing last night in regards to re-establishing the cumulative capital development fund for the city, but no city taxpayers were present to give their input on the matter. Unfortunately, the council did not have a quorum as three members were absent, preventing them from conducting any official business besides discussion.
Clerk Evelyn Skronski notes that Monday, April 29 is the last day to request an absentee ballot by mail and the Travel Board will be going out to collect votes beginning this Thursday, April 25. If you would like to request a visit by the travel board, call the clerk’s office at 772-9160.
Superintendent Lynn Johnson explained that remodeling projects are planned down the road the Emcor will help identify what areas need the most work at all of the facilities. The initial findings will be reported to the board in future meetings.
The school board also approved the retirements of kindergarten teacher Cheryl Orkis, 5th grade teacher Terri Minix and classroom assistant Anita Ludlow. Shirley Mosher, who has worked in the cafeteria for 41 years, will also be retiring this school year.
