The West Central School Board members approved several retirements at their recent meeting. Superintendent Charles Mellon said quite a few experienced teachers will be leaving the corporation at the end of the school year.

“Betty Sprunger, who has been teaching health and P.E. at West Central for several years, is retiring along with Cheryl Podell who is a first grade teacher,” said Mellon. “Jenni Garten, a third grade teacher and Linda Ferguson, a high school business teacher, are also retiring.”

Donna Baer, a special education coordinator with Cooperative School Services also submitted her request for retirement.

Mellon said the board will soon be looking to fill some of those positions being left vacant by the retirements.

“Elementary-wise, we’ll probably fill the third grade position and hold off on the first grade. We had a small kindergarten class so we’re going to kind of wait and see what the enrollment is with our Kindergarten Round-up that’s coming up very soon. We’ll see if both positions need to be filled or not,” Mellon said.

The board thanked all of the teachers for their many years of dedicated service to the West Central School Corporation.
