Starke/Pulaski Habitat for Humanity Still Accepting Applications

Starke/Pulaski Habitat for Humanity is gearing up to build their next home for a family in need. Steve Morrison of Habitat told WKVI that the organization is still taking applications from interested parties who feel they may be qualified, and he said Habitat will soon make their selection as to whom they feel would most benefit from the home, with construction to begin in the summer.

Morrison explained that they plan to use the walls, studs, and other parts of the structure that were fabricated at IU Health Starke Hospital last May to build a permanent location for whatever family qualifies. He said Habitat typically constructs a typical three-bedroom home that generally follows the same style, with similar floor plans and other designs, allowing the organization to build parts of the soon-to-be-constructed home at a different location prior to the full construction.

So far, the Habitat for Humanity organization for Starke and Pulaski counties has constructed four houses after first organizing in 1999. Just two short years after the organization came about, their first house was completed, and they’ve followed that same schedule ever since; Morrison said that fundraising efforts have allowed them to build a home every two or three years. The fundraising is necessary in order to allow Habitat to purchase hardware and other items to get the construction underway.
