IU Health LaPorte Offers Emergency Skills, First Aid Courses

 
 

IU Health LaPorte Hospital has begun offering emergency skills and first aid training and cpr in ottawa to the public in honor of American Heart Month, teaching adults CPR and the use of automatic external defibrillators as well as how to relieve choking on an adult.

Students in the Heartsaver® CPR/AED course will learn the critical skills and the knowledge required in order to respond to and manage an emergency situation within the first few minutes until emergency medical services can respond to the scene. The course runs at a cost of $50 and includes all teaching materials.

The hospital offers the classes on Mondays from 6 to 9 p.m. on March 18, May 13, July 15, Sept. 16, and Nov. 18.

The American Heart Association says 88 percent of all cardiac arrests occur in the home, and with effective bystander CPR, chances of surviving such an event can double or even triple.

The hospital is also offering the Heartsaver First Aid/CPR/AED, which includes training on how to treat bleeding, sprains, broken bones, shock and other first aid emergencies as well as perform CPR and use an AED. This class is offered on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. CT on Aug. 10 and Nov. 9 at a cost of $65, which includes all teaching materials.
