North Judson Residents Encouraged to Run Water Taps During Cold Temperatures

With the bitter cold temperatures in the Kankakee Valley, North Judson residents are strongly encouraged to leave their water taps running just a little bit. North Judson Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry explained that Town Superintendent Marshall Horstmann told the board at their meeting this week that because of the very cold temperatures and the lack of snow on the ground, the pipes are particularly vulnerable to freezing.

Horstmann said the snow typically helps to insulate the ground and the pipes just a little bit, and without that, pipes and meters are more susceptible to the cold. At least one resident has reported frozen pipes, which can cause a number of issues.

The board also at their meeting this week appointed a new town attorney to replace Cassandra Hine. The board approved the hiring of Rachel Arndt, an attorney with Rochester firm Peterson, Waggoner, and Perkins. Henry said the board had reviewed several potential candidates for the position before narrowing it down to three, and at their meeting on Monday night, voted Arndt to be the new attorney.

The board also approved an extension of the contract with Richard’s Disposal. Henry explained because there was no increase in price from March 2013 to March 2014, and the audience present expressed no complaints toward the business, the board did not need to seek bids for the service. Instead, the board gave written confirmation for the service to continue as is.
