40 Flu-Related Deaths Confirmed in Indiana

The number of flu-related deaths has now climbed to 40.

Of the 40 deaths, 38 individuals had underlying medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and asthma. A large majority of the deaths occurred in individuals older than the age of 65.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that this season’s flu vaccine is approximately 62 percent effective. Health officials stress that while the flu vaccine does not guarantee immunity, it is still the best protections from the flu.

This season’s vaccine offer protection against the three most common strains of influenza: H3N2, H1N1 and Influenza B.
