Search For Wanted Felon Continues in Marshall County

The search for a wanted man in Marshall County has reached day five, as officers continue to search for William Newman after the pursuit began on Tuesday, Dec. 11. While officials have received tips that he’s been spotted in Rochester and South Bend, police have thus far been unable to locate the elusive suspect.

Residents are encouraged to call (574) 936-3187 or dial 911 if they see him or have any new information.

Deputies had attempted to serve a Fulton County felony drug warrant on Tuesday near Lake of the Woods, but the target sped off in a pickup truck and led police on a high speed pursuit that reached speeds in excess of 100 mph. The pursuit lasted approximately 15 minutes before ending in a muddy farm field near 4th and Rose roads in Marshall County near Tyner.

The chase didn’t end there, however, as Newman fled into the nearby woods and scaled a 10-foot fence. More than 20 officers from seven police agencies began to canvas a two-square-mile search zone while Marshall County and the Indiana State Police both dispatched K9 units to track down Newman through the dense woods.

The state police even launched a Cessna aircraft, but were still unable to locate the man. Residents were warned to lock their doors and windows and stay vigilant as police searched for the wanted man. Police checked identification for every vehicle entering or leaving the area to make sure Newman did not break into a garage and steal a car.

The formal search was called off around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Because police found a baggy filled with ammunition that they believe Newman tossed, he is suspected to be armed and dangerous.

William Newman has thinning greyish-black hair and was last seen wearing a gray plaid hoodie. If you see him or think you may know where he is hiding out, call 911 or the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department at (574) 936-3187.
