An inmate at the LaPorte County Jail miscarried after an incident with police.

A woman who had been incarcerated in the jail on a probation violation since November 14, was reportedly involved in a physical altercation with another inmate. A jailer intervened and was taken to the floor by one of the inmates before other deputies responded to the incident.

The inmate was given commands to comply with orders to release the deputy but did not comply. Deputies deployed a taser to protect the officer. The 23-year-old inmate then complied with officers.

She was taken to IU Health LaPorte Hospital for a precautionary evaluation as she was pregnant. During the examination, it was determined that the fetus had died. The inmate was released from the hospital and incarceration. No other injuries were reported.

The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau is investigating this case. The LaPorte County Coroner and the Indiana State Jail Inspector’s Office is assisting in the investigation. More information will be released upon the conclusion of the investigation.
