Holiday Shopping Tips To Keep You Safe

Christmas is less than two weeks away, and you know what that means: holiday shopping, for those who haven’t already. Unfortunately, the holidays – a time for cheer, hope and joy – are also a time for increased crime. Crooks seem to love the holidays as much as everyone else because the season represents an increased opportunity to find unprotected goods.

To help your shopping go safely, the Indiana Sheriff’s Association highly encourages shoppers to stay alert and aware of what’s going on around them, deter pickpockets and purse-snatchers by carrying your purse close to your body and placing your wallet in a front pants pocket, and never leave your purse unattended in a shopping cart.

In addition, never carry large sums of cash; whenever possible, use credit or debit cards or checks. Park in a well-lighted area, and be sure to lock the doors, close the windows, and hide any shopping bags and gifts in the trunk. When returning to your car or home, always have your keys in hand, ready to open the door.

Carefully check the front and rear seats and floors for anyone that may be hiding. Shop with friends or family – there is safety in numbers. Finally, teach your children to go to a store clerk or security guard if you get separated. For additional security guard information and options visit Community Action Security.
