Veteran Sgt. Tim Watts Speaks at Knox Middle School

Sgt. Tim Watts speaks to the assembly at Knox Middle School.

Schools across the nation held Veterans Day programs today, and Knox Community Schools were no different. Following the presentation of colors by the Knox VFW Post 748 and the Pledge of Allegiance led by middle school student Mariah McKee, a special guest speaker addressed the crowd.

Recently-returned U.S. Army National Guard Sergeant Tim Watts spoke to the gathered students about his call to duty for the military and what Veterans Day means to him. He explained that his time in the military consisted of some of the hardest times of his life but he knew it was his duty to protect and serve his country.

Watts said it was a great opportunity to speak at the assembly.

Members of the Knox VFW Post presented the colors at the assembly.

“While I was overseas, I had actually done an email program with Mrs. Kleinfehn’s class, and when I got back, I had come to the school and got to talk to the kids and show them some pictures and stuff from overseas,” Watts explained. “During that time, the assistant principal came and asked me if I’d be willing to come and speak at the Veteran’s Day programs here at the high school and middle school, and I agreed. I thought it was a good way for me to kind of get to share some of my story and get to speak to the kids.”

The American Legion performed a rifle salute as part of the ceremony and Taps was played by the Knox Middle School trumpeters Cody Himes and Lucas Jesuit. A brief moment of silence was also held before the presentation was adjourned.
