Nancy Dembowski Honored Today At Community Center

Nancy Dembowski
Nancy Dembowski will be honored for her many efforts on the state and local level in an Open House tomorrow from 2-4 p.m. CT at the newly renamed Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center in Knox.

One of the first community activities Nancy was involved in was the introduction of the peppermint candy canes as Christmas decorations for the City of Knox. She reminisces about that time.

“I was working at the radio station then and Kathy Van Gilder and I were bemoaning the fact that the city didn’t have money for Christmas decorations so we sort of put together some efforts and I guess maybe that was sort of my first involvement in community things,” said Dembowski.

Ted Hayes, who reminisced with Nancy about those early times, said she went from painting candy canes to the Statehouse. She laughed and said that while that’s an interesting analogy she has met some great people along the way and has been involved in great opportunities.

“I had an opportunity to be involved in some process in Indianapolis that not many people get a chance to do and it was a tremendous honor and it was so interesting. What a wonderful experience.”

Nancy and Ted had a radio show years ago on WKVI that many people in the area remember. When you attend the Open House tomorrow, maybe reminisce about that show or many of Nancy’s other accomplishments with her while you enjoy refreshments at the Community Center.
