Civil War Reenactment To Take Place Near Hoosier Valley RR Museum

Go back in time at the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum in North Judson this weekend and experience the huge impact railroading had on the Civil War.

On Saturday, Aug. 18, residents are encouraged to wander through the Civil War encampment and experience the life of early soldiers. Among the reenactors will be the Indiana 20th Volunteers Division, including their leader, Col. John Wheeler – a soldier from Crown Point who was killed near Devil’s Den during the Battle of Gettysburg.

Tour the museum to learn the history of railroading in northwest Indiana, stand next to a steam engine, then board a vintage caboose or open-air car on the train to enjoy a leisurely ride through the countryside on a tour of Starke and LaPorte counties.

The museum is open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. CT. The round-trip, 10-mile train rides depart for English Lake at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., with a cost of $11 for adults 16 and up, $9 for children ages six to 15, and $5 for children ages one to five. The 2:45 p.m. round-trip, 20-mile train ride to LaCrosse is $19 for adults, $13 for children younger than 15, and $7 for children younger than five. The museum is always free, but tickets for the trains may be purchased online at www.hoosiervalley.org.

The museum is open on Saturdays only, and can be reached at (574) 896-3950.
