Week in Review February 13th-17th, 2012

Here is a look at some of the news that made the news in the Kankakee Valley this week:

Tessa J. Haney and her two year old daughter, Jocelyn, were saved by Knox City Police Officer, Chad Dulin, and Knox-Center Township Firefighter, Wayne Noah, after they helped them from their overturned car that had crashed into a deep ditch filled with water on State Road 8.

The Family Dollar store in Culver was robbed at gunpoint late Saturday night. The Culver Police Department continues to search for the suspect. 

State Representative Nancy Dembowski

Nancy Dembowski has decided to end her 26 year political career. The Democrat State Representative has also been the Mayor of Knox, a County Councilwoman and a State Senator.

Sasha Glover and Colleen Henry of Knox were arrested Monday night after they were allegedly trying to steal merchandise from Walmart in Plymouth. They both face charges of Theft and Henry has additional preliminary charges of Neglect of a Dependent and False Informing.

Ryan Loehmer, Cory Caudill and Brenan Sanchez of Culver were arrested in Plymouth Monday night after police reportedly found heroin, marijuana and drug paraphernalia in their possession.

Anthony McNeal and his 6-month-old daughter of Plymouth were injured in a two vehicle accident in Marshall County Monday afternoon. After an investigation into the accident, McNeal was arrested on preliminary charges of Criminal Recklessness, Neglect of a Dependent, and Operating a Vehicle under the Influence of a Schedule I or Schedule II Controlled Substance.

Pulaski Memorial Hospital

Pulaski Memorial Hospital CEO Rick Mynark is retiring after a 40 plus year career in health care administration.

Two-way radios will be rebanded in Starke County by 2013. The FCC is making way for more frequencies to be utilized by emergency personnel and other users.

Stacie Brown

Stacie Brown was sentenced in Starke Circuit Court Tuesday to 50 years in prison. She pleaded guilty to a charge of Battery Resulting in Death. She caused the death of her step-son, Ethan Brown, in June of last year.

David Luttrell, of Winamac, was arrested on a preliminary charge of Driving While Suspended-Prior after Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department officers conducted a traffic stop. His passenger, Wyatt Hagerman, also of Winamac, was arrested on a preliminary charge of Possession of a Syringe.

Indiana State Police officers are investigating a one-vehicle accident on Beech Road north of U.S. 30 in Bourbon. 75-year-old Louis Cady, of Nappanee, reportedly drown after his pickup went off the road and into a water-filled ditch.

The Eastern Pulaski School Board voted to amend the three semester school year to two semesters at the Winamac High School.

The cause of the fire that injured a North Judson child is under investigation with the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s office. The fire damaged a home at 3942 W. 3rd Street in North Judson.

The City of Knox and the Coalition Against Domestic Abuse were the recipients of a $424,620 Community Focus Fund Grant. The money will be used to help build an addition to the Phoenix House.

Congressman Donnelly Honors Robert Tauteris, Jr. on the House floor

Congressman Joe Donnelly recognized Spc. Robert Tauteris, Jr., of Hamlet, on the House floor Thursday. Tauteris died after a roadside bomb detonated and killed him and three others in the vehicle he was riding in Afghanistan.

The Drug and Tobacco Free Starke County organization will be organizing its own financing committee – a task that had been handled by the state until a misappropriation of funds was admitted by Coalition Coordinator, Jennie Carter.

The Starke County Board of Zoning Appeals tabled a building permit issue for a structure owned by Julia Ford at 6690 East 250 North in Grovertown.
