Since the 1970’s, the Knox Kiwanis Club has helped those in need with Christmas food baskets and yesterday, members of the Knox National Honor Society and the Student Council, plus North Judson and Knox Kiwanis members, helped assemble those baskets at Community Services of Starke County.
Knox Kiwanis member, Todd Wallsmith, talked about this year’s effort.
“This year the majority of our food came from the Knox Community Schools,” he said. “The High School won the contest with about 2,600 pounds of food. We’ve got about 6,000-7,000 pounds of food total between the three schools. There’s a group called Mothers of Preschoolers and they donated about 100 pounds of food. There was an anonymous donor from the Knox High School who donated $500. Starke County Co-Op donated money as well. Family Express donated 175 half-gallons of milk and 175 loaves of bread which is more than enough to give at least one to every family.”
Leftover fruit not picked up during the recent music department fundraiser was also donated.
130-135 families, or 800 total people, will benefit from the effort this year. The baskets will be delivered today, beginning at 9:00 a.m.
“If you get a note in your door, and you don’t get here by 5:00 p.m., your basket may be, we can’t guarantee it, but it may be at the Community Services office to pick up on Monday. You’ll need to bring in your note, or letter, that says you’re entitled to a basket. If you have a note in your door and you can’t get up here, you can call (574) 249-1212 and we’ll make arrangements for you to get your basket at a later time.”
