A petition that has been circulating since the closure of Monterey Elementary School by the Culver Community School Corporation has finally made its way to the school board. The petition, which has gathered 641 signatures, requests deannexation from the Culver School Corporation with the hope of being annexed into the Eastern Pulaski School Corporation. According to Superintendent Brad Schuldt, Monterey Town Board President Jim Fleury presented the petition to the board at this week’s meeting.

Fleury explained that Tippecanoe Township has a total of 840 landowners, so 641 signatures is an overwhelming majority.

“With the majority that we accumulated as far as names on the petition, we feel like it sends a message, the feelings of the people of Tippecanoe Township. But on the other hand, they may have feelings too,” said Fleury.

Schuldt said that the board received the petition and took it under advisement. He said that the board will work with the school attorney on reviewing options but he did not say what options are available.

Monterey Town Board President Jim Fleury says the petition was started because Tippecanoe Township residents were promised that the town of Monterey would always have a local school.

The next meeting for the Culver School Board will take place on Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. ET.
