Week in Review for October 10th-14th, 2011

Here is just some of the news that made the news in the Kankakee Valley this week:

Knox Community School students and the community were saddened this week with the news of 17-year-old Drew Shearin’s death in a single vehicle accident. A candlelight vigil was held for him Wednesday night and his funeral was yesterday.

The Knox City Police Department is gathering information in their investigation into a burglary at Five Star. The security video can be seen on our website at wkvi.com or on our Facebook page.

Monterey Elementary School

600 signatures have been gathered in a petition to deannex Tippecanoe Township from the Culver Community School Corporation. The Culver School Board has not yet seen the document but will keep the Corporation’s best interest in mind when reviewing the petition.

Knox-Center Township Fire Chief, Kenny Pfost, kept us informed of fire prevention tips in observance of National Fire Prevention Week.

Jim Carr was found guilty on a charge of Murder on Friday, October 7th after a four day trial in Fulton County Superior Court. Sentencing is set for November 4th.

IU Health Starke Hospital Board members, Sandy Hansen, Ben Bennett and Dr. Walter Fritz, were named to a committee that will bring a sale recommendation of IU Health Starke County to IU Health LaPorte County to the county.

Culver Community School Board

The Culver Community School Board and the Culver Community Teacher’s Association have both ratified a contract. The contract included no raises for the staff and the teachers agreed to contribute more of their own money to cover their insurance plans.

The Pulaski County Planning Commission will present planning documents to the County Commissioners on Monday to move the county closer to implementing zoning regulations.

Thom Morin

Knox City Council Republican candidate, Thom Morin, complained about his opponent’s campaigning effort at the Knox-Center Township Fire Department’s pancake breakfast on Sunday. Morin did not attend the event, but Democrat Donald Kring said that he had permission to provide campaign materials to those attending the breakfast before the event.

A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of suspects involved in a burglary incident at Five Star in Knox. Security footage can be found on our website at wkvi.com or on our Facebook page.

Linda Belork

Former Starke County Treasurer Linda Belork’s lawsuit will be heard in Jasper County. The request for a change of venue was granted by Starke Circuit Court Judge Kim Hall last week.

Officers from the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department are investigating a shooting incident between Josh Isom, of Monticello, and Jason Creque, of Pulaski County.

Kankakee Valley Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #129 President, Chris Kisela, presented a certificate of appreciation to Knox Kindergarten student, Jack Guzman, for his donation to the F.O.P.’s Shop with a Cop program.
