Week in Review for August 29th-September 2nd, 2011

Here is just some of the news that made the news in the Kankakee Valley this week:

Officers from the Starke County Sheriff’s Department investigated an accident involving a pickup truck and a moped at the intersection of 600 East and 700 North last week. The driver of the moped, Divvad Niebuurt, of Grovertown, was airlifted from the scene. Niebuurt was hit by a pickup truck driven by Brandon Ferch. Niebuurt apparently failed to stop at the intersection, pulling into the path of Ferch. Ferch was not injured in the accident.

Darwin Barnett

Darwin Barnett was arrested by North Judson police on Wednesday, August 24th after he had reportedly cut his ankle bracelet off on August 19th while on home detention in Starke County.

Christopher Deem of Knox was injured last week when his vehicle left the roadway on 300 East near State Road 8 and hit a tree. Due to his injuries, he was unable to give a statement as to the origin of the accident.

Ronald Lee Magers of Medaryville was arrested on Thursday, August 25th by Pulaski County officers after he allegedly attempted to enter a residence without permission. He was also reportedly in the possession of drug paraphernalia and drugs when police searched him. In a separate incident, Joshua Attinger of Winamac was arrested Thursday, August 25th after police found drugs in his vehicle during a routine traffic stop. Both Magers and Attinger await formal charges by the Pulaski County Prosecutor’s Office.

Starke County Jail

Starke County Sheriff Oscar Cowen and County Councilman David Pearman recently attended the National Institute of Corrections in Colorado and says the next step is to figure out if a new jail needs to be built or if money will be sunk into the current facility to make the repairs necessary to bring it up-to-date.

Shayna Howard

Shayna Howard, 20, of Knox was arrested Thursday, August 25th after she reportedly tried to purchase a pseudoephedrine product under a false name. Drugs were also allegedly found at her home following a search warrant. She was arrested on preliminary charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Cocaine or Narcotic Drug and Identity Deception.

Ryan Taylor and Kenneth K. Wallace were arrested Tuesday after they were allegedly involved in setting Taylor’s mother’s vehicle on fire in the Monterey area.

Linda Belork

Starke Circuit Court Judge Kim Hall signed an order today establishing the procedure for selecting a nearby court to hear County Treasurer, Linda Belork’s, case in which she disputes being dismissed from her duties as County Treasurer.

Over 300 signatures have been collected to deannex Tippecanoe Township from the Culver Community School District.

Eduardo Arnal

The new Consul General of Mexico visited Starke County this week. Eduardo Arnal met with Starke County Economic Development Director Charles Weaver to discuss industry. The northern part of Indiana is under Arnal’s jurisdiction and was visiting counties to offer the services of his office with any questions officials might need answered.

Knox Attorney, Todd Wallsmith, will not be permitted to practice law from October 1st to November 15th after the Indiana Supreme Court found that he violated the Indiana Professional Conduct Code.
