Week in Review for June 13th-17th, 2011

Here’s just some of the news that made the news in the Kankakee Valley this week:

The Starke County Relay for Life event was held over the weekend and over $60,000 was raised.  Team Imagine raised $8,000 and they were announced as the winners of the team collection event.

Rodger Griffin was arrested Thursday, June 9th after police were called to a residence where he had allegedly battered his girlfriend and threatened the life of her son.  He was charged with Domestic Battery, Intimidation with a Deadly Weapon and Resisting Law Enforcement.

A group consisting of six Knox school students were selected as this year’s Unsung Heroes.  The students raised $200 to give to Mr. Klimek’s class.

Finas Conley of Francesville and Tyson Matthews of Medaryville were arrested Sunday on a Possession of Controlled Substance charge after police found the pair passed out at the Marathon Gas station in Medaryville.

A public forum is scheduled for Wednesday, June 22nd at 6:00 p.m. at the LaPorte County Government Complex to discuss concerns about gasoline prices and oil markets.

A representative from the Marshall County Council on Aging was at the Culver Town Board meeting this week to discuss the possibility of expanding services to the Culver area.

Administrators and teachers at the Eastern Pulaski School Corporation have been working on ways to effectively handle discipline problems.  The state has mandated the elimination of in-school and out-of-school suspensions.

The North Judson-Wayne Township Fire Department was called to a house fire at 5315 W. 500 N. on Wednesday.  The origin of the fire will be decided by the Indiana State Fire Marshall’s office.

Starke County IT Director Bob Smith recently submitted his resignation to the Starke County Commissioners.  He has been the IT Director since December 2007 and his last day will be July 29th.

The Eastern Pulaski School Board has instructed Superintendent, Dr. Robert Klitzman to add a bus route to Tippecanoe Township so the school can transport students who decide to attend Winamac Elementary who were former students of Monterey Elementary.

The City of Knox has joined Hammond and LaPorte in opposing an electric increase by NIPSCO.

The Starke County Commissioners agreed to ask the Council for $100,000 for attorney fees expected to be paid for the class action lawsuit filed by Starke County Jail inmate Jack Haut.

Four individuals in relation to the animal fighting contest that took place in February appeared before Judge Kim Hall where the Judge denied a motion to suppress evidence and a motion to declare a search warrant invalid.
