Moore Family to Move into Habitat for Humanity Home this Saturday

Tracy and Tim Moore will be moving into their new Habitat for Humanity home Saturday in Winamac. The 1,050 square foot home was built in six months by volunteers for the Moores who have two children and another on the way.

Steve Morrison is the President of the Starke/Pulaski Habitat for Humanity Organization and tells us about the the selection process.

“We knew we were going to build this house in Pulaski County this time so we held our call out meetings in Winamac,” explained Morrison. “People came and we gave them applications and explained the program to them. They filled out the applications and returned them to us and we went through various criteria that Habitat for Humanity has for us. They have the ability to repay the mortgage and willingness to partnership with Habitat for Humanity and put in their 250 sweat equity hours on the house.”

The home is located at 530 Jenkins Street, and the Moores have a great neighbor in Betty Maxwell who has opened her garage each Saturday for the workers.

“We couldn’t thank Betty Maxwell enough. Being right next to her, she’s let us use her heated garage to eat lunch in and her storage shed to store equipment and tools. It’s just been a really good situation.”

An open house will be held Saturday, February 19th for the Moore family from 2:00-4:00 p.m. ET. Tim Moore told reporters on Saturday that the family will start moving in immediately after the open house.

Morrison said it’s hoped that the fifth home built by the organization can be in Knox.

“We’ve built two in North Judson, one in Winamac and one in Ripley. We’d like to build a house in Knox. We just need to come up with a property. We’ve had most of our properties donated to us, either through a bank or individual. We can purchase them also.”

If you have a piece of property you’d like to donate, call us here at the station and we’ll get the information to Steve Morrison.
