Week in Review for December 6th-10th, 2010

Here is just some of the news that made the news in the Kankakee Valley this week.

Diana Jedynak, 67, died of fire related injuries after her home caught fire early Monday morning in Washington Township. Indiana State Fire Marshal, Fred Sumpter, said the investigation into the cause of the fire was postponed due to the weather conditions and the integrity of the structure.

Northwest Indiana Forum, Inc.

The Northwest Indiana Forum’s Board of Directors have voted to acknowldge the organization’s service territory to extend beyond Lake, Porter, LaPorte and Starke Counties to include Newton, Jasper and Pulaski Counties.

The Knox Community School Board learned of the Corporation’s AYP and PL 221 results at its meeting Monday night. The Corporation made AYP along with the Elementary and Middle School, but the High School fell short due to a percentage point in the English 10 test.

The Maxinkuckee Players performed their holiday concert Monday night at the Knox United Methodist Church where 250 people attended the program.

Starke County Public Health Nurse, Frank Lynch, and Terri Hansen, the Director of Environmental Health at the Pulaski County Health Department, reported no cases of influenza to date. Both encouraged residents to get a flu shot to prevent getting influenza.

The Starke County Development Foundation celebrated its 25th Anniversary with a special program Friday afternoon.

Leon Wera, a 1982 graduate of North Judson-San Pierre High School, was killed in a single vehicle accident in New Buffalo, Michigan. Police say he hit an ice patch on the road and lost control of the SUV he was driving. The SUV went airborne and landed upside down in Blood Run Creek.

Knox students assembled food baskets Thursday and delivered them Friday to those in need in the Knox area. The students worked with the Knox Kiwanis members on this project.

The Starke County Commissioners approved First Source Insurance’s CIGNA plan as the County Employee Health Program. The Commissioners also approved the purchase of cameras that would upgrade security at the Starke County Jail.

Eight new CASA volunteers were recently sworn into office by Starke Circuit Court Judge, Kim Hall.

Teresa Stoner, mother of Karen Dunn of Knox, spoke of her experiences during the time when Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7th, 1941. She was in Honolulu, Hawaii at the time of the attack.
